Custom Curved Treads & Nosings: Match Your Stairs to Your Floors Perfectly

Bottom Curved Stairs

Upgrading your staircase can completely transform your home. If you have a curved staircase, finding the perfect match for your steps can be a challenge. We are proud to offer custom-made curved stair treads and nosings designed to give your home a beautiful, premium finish.

To keep things simple, our custom pieces can be built in two different ways: we can make them directly from your engineered flooring, or we can build them from solid wood that is stained to a beautiful, complementary color.

Choosing Your Material & Style

Custom Stair Nosing Profile

Depending on the look you want to achieve, you can choose between our two main options:

  • Engineered Flooring (Highly Recommended): When we build treads and nosings from your engineered flooring, they will feature a modern, square nosing profile. This style typically comes with a 1 ½ inch drop face and a 1 inch return. Making steps out of your flooring material is much more economical and gives you a superior look because all of your flooring stays perfectly consistent throughout the entire house.
  • Solid Wood: If your staircase requires a rounded front (bull) nosing, we must build them out of solid wood. Once shaped, we will stain the wood to a complementary color that coordinates with your floors.

How We Measure and Handcraft Your Treads

Stair CAD Drawing

Because every curved staircase is unique, this process requires either a site visit from our team or a physical template provided by the customer to ensure an exact match.

Raw, plywood stair steps tend to be built by hand on the job site, which means they are rarely perfect. To compensate for this, we intentionally build our finished treads a little bit larger. This extra material allows us to create a true, perfect geometric shape that is highly pleasing to the eye once installed.

Exciting Technology Update!
We are currently developing a new 3D scanning technology to perfectly copy raw stair treads. Our goal is to make sure your custom pieces fit perfectly on the job site without requiring any extra cutting or trimming by your installer.

This technology is still in its infancy stage, and we hope to have it fully available to the public by the end of 2026. Until then, we are proactively scanning all of our current jobs to test the system and ensure the option works perfectly!

Dealing with Curved Riser Boards

Rounded nosings and curved treads typically require a curved riser board (the vertical back part of the step) to sit behind them. To make installation easy, we are now fluting the back side of the risers so that they can easily bend around corners without breaking.

We also must know exactly what your riser material is going to be before we start production. This allows us to adjust the size of the treads so the riser fits perfectly behind the overlapping nosing part.

Understanding the Cost Breakdown

Custom curved stairs require a lot of detail and labor. Here is exactly how the pricing is broken down for each option:

If Making From Your Flooring Material:

There are 3 specific cost components for building curved treads from your engineered flooring:

  1. The initial site visit or a usable template provided by you.
  2. The computer design (CAD) process for each individual tread, which typically takes 30 to 45 minutes per step.
  3. The physical cutting and assembly of the final tread. This part is charged by the linear foot, following the edge of the tread or nosing at its full length.

If Making From Solid Wood:

When choosing solid wood, there are a few extra steps involved. In addition to the design and cutting, the price will include the cost of the raw lumber, the preparation of the wood to get it ready for fabrication, and the time required to custom stain the wood to match your home.
